The American Eskimo is a beautifully bred, snow white spitz-type dog, looking very much like a miniature Samoyed.
The American Eskimo comes in three sizes: toy, miniature and standard. The variations in size make the American Eskimo a possible choice for all house size types. They tend to be a rather affectionate and loving dog. They also tend to be playful and good with children. Because of their alertness, the American Eskimo is generally an easy-to-train breed. Additional Personality Information: The American Eskimo, naturally wary of strangers, can be very territorial and have been known to not permit a stranger to enter the home until the owner gives an ok for them to do so. The dog, if socialized well, will not bite unless provoked.
The American Eskimo does not respond well to negative training methods and should have training start at a very young age. Standard Facts: | Height: | Toy | 9 to 12 inches | | | Miniature | 12 to 15 inches | | | Standard | 15 to 19 inches | | Weight: | Toy | 6 to 10 pounds | | | Miniature | 10 to 20 pounds | | | Standard | 18 to 35 pounds |
Coat: A very thick double coat that needs continual care. Heavy shedding to be expected.
Lifespan: 15-16 years
The standard appearance calls for the American Eskimo to be either white or white/biscuit in color with brown eyes.
Additional Care Information: The American Eskimo can gain weight very quickly so should be exercised regularly. Health Issues: The breed itself tends to be a very hardy breed; however, the American Eskimo owner should closely watch the eyes and tear ducts. The American Eskimo is prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
The dog's thick double coat needs constant care and should remain flea free or the dog could suffer from dermatitis.
In relation to dermatitis, the American Eskimo has a tendency to develop a severe allergy to fleas, which can result in a frantic scratching and gnawing behavior as well as painful areas on the skin and/or skin lesions. Alternate Names:- Deutscher Spitz
- German Spitz
