Chihuahuas are named for the state in Mexico where they were first discovered by Western dog lovers in the late 1800’s. By 1904, Chihuahuas were a recognized breed that competed in shows. The early history of the Chihuahua is uncertain, but it is likely that the little dogs or their ancestors were developed by ancient Aztecs or Incas.

Chihuahuas tend to be very selective about who they will befriend. Often Chihuahuas will choose one person as their favorite, and without proper socialization, may even guard him or her from anyone or anything that comes near. Chihuahuas do not make good pets for children because of their miniscule size and tendency to bite when frightened. Chihuahuas have an odd dislike for any dogs that aren’t Chihuahuas and do best when partnered with their own kind.

Short-coated Chihuahuas need very little grooming while long-coated Chihuahuas require daily brushing and some regular trimming around the ears, feet, and under the tail.

Chihuahuas will happily entertain themselves indoors and don’t require much exercise. However, Chihuahuas can benefit immensely from walks around the neighborhood that provide opportunities to socialize. Chihuahuas can become destructive if not given plenty of stimulating toys and human interaction.

Chihuahuas are mischievous dogs and tend to take over the house if not trained properly and well socialized. Chihuahuas are not inclined to perform tricks or even listen if they don’t have to, so a good understanding of training techniques is essential to success with the breed.
